An important part of a design phase is to know which materials are right for each situation. Each material will have a host of material properties, making it better suited for some applications, but not others.

Understand your materials. They have color, texture, glossiness, dullness, hotness, coldness, hardness, softness.
Get aware of the limitations and uses of the materials being used. Brick, concrete, stone all have similar properties, but you might not use a brick to make an arch.
Knowing your materials also gives you an idea of the cost, it will help you work in the budget constraints.
Be familiar with the products, their net worth, and where these are destined to be used and the area so designed reflects the expertise of the designer.
